Spring in the distance....

I have been down with a nasty chest infection, like so many of us this month.....So much to do, moving back home but unable to...temporarily immobilized..it gives me time to reflect on tasks waiting and aspirations incubating in my mind...

I ordered more rose bushes which will arrive in April... Centifolia variegata, Antonia d'Ormois, Blanc double de Coubert, and Empress Josephine...all very floriferous and shade tolerant ....hope to place these among more boxwood in the garden....if you live in the Niagara area, Palatine Roses is an excellent source of old fashioned roses, located on Creek Road in Niagara on the Lake...Ontario. They ship to the U.S. as well.

Unknown to my husband, I am still hoping to build a little garden folly !! Perhaps my folly, after the renovation this year! This photo above is from Velvet and Linen....perfect as a storage area for garden tools or potting supplies...I would add a window somewhere...it would look great at the border of the woodland garden....

You may remember the post on our dog Tukk's doggie house, he has been gone for a while, and how I was planning to use it in the construction of an aviary or dovecote...my husband didn't think chickens, pigeons or doves was a good idea in the garden! A garden folly is at least more palatable to him! We shall see! I think it should be reinvented into something useful again....don't you?

I am anxious to show and share the changes at Acorn Lane over the last eight months....my husband has been moving some furniture and boxes for me to arrange and open, while I am languishing in an antibiotic daze this week....I have been able to salvage and reuse the vintage lights which I have collected over the years, and hope to make this the first post of the renovation... I think you will be pleased with them as much as I am! Late winter is a good time to move in and get settled, the move in behind me, and hopefully I will be ready to welcome the garden, with Spring not far in the distance.....

  1. Nella, This cold season has been brutal, glad to hear that you are starting to see the light of day again.
A little folly or tinker house is a beautiful idea. There are so many architectural salvage places in southern Ontario that have great arches & windows to enhance your special project. I've always loved the idea of a stone wall with an old wooden door that opens to a secret garden......

  3. A gorgeous image of a lady gardener in times past - I wish I had been part of that era don't you?!
LOVe all the roses you've ordered - Blanc double de Coubert does exceptionally well in our climate.

Antoni d'Ormois is exquisite, I googled it and there is a good photo here:

One of the things I love about Winter is time to pour over the garden catalogues, planning and choosing the plants to order!

Tukk's old kennel would make a wonderful dovecote.... I'm sure you're still working on that Nella!!!

Lovely to catch up with you today thank you for visiting me.

  4. Dearest Nella,

I am SO SORRY to hear that you have had this bad of a chest infection! That will always knock us over. I could have one of those for at least three months! I pray that the warmer air that is coming (soon, I hope!) will help in getting you back on your feet.

I am LOVING your ideas for garden folly! OH YES! Imagine a tea house as well? Enjoy my dear! Oh, I am going to miss Blogland while I am away! Anita

  5. Nella, so sorry to hear you have been under the weather. I love your opening picture, flower basket and glass of wine in hand, long flowing garments, I so wish that was me! You probably have exhausted yourself with all the moving and rennovations, I hope that you are taking care of yourself?
I have been catching up with your posts, I love all your inspiration pictures, I think green is such a good choice for your home, bringing your beautiful garden inside. I think your dog house is amazing and would look superb integrated into a folly. When I was at school, my school was an historic building and the gardens had been landscaped by Capability Brown, there was a folly in the grounds and I always loved the romantic idea of it.
Your kitchen is drop-dead gorgeous, and I hope you don't mind I have saved a copy of it, not to use, but to keep as inspiration for my own kitchen someday? If you do mind I will delete it of course.
You have the best bit coming up now the 'titivating' as I call it. It will be so much fun arranging your things in a new space. Good luck with it all, and do keep us posted.

Thank you so much for your visit and lovely comments. I thought it was high time I showed my face to my loyal and lovely readers, although it gives me no pleasure.
Please get well soon, and accept a big virtual hug from me, love Linda x

  6. Dear Nella -
So sorry you are under the weather. I finally stopped coughing!! Feeling somewhat normal, again. Drink lots of hot tea and orange juice. I'm really looking forward to seeing photos of your sunroom and kitchen. You take care, and enjoy your home.

  9. Hello again Nella, thank you for your visit and kind remarks. I love your idea for the signs. Of course you could get some from me. I am not geared up to accept credit cards or anything, so I am not quite sure how it could be done. I was selling them at the fair for £10 ea, they are a little less than 12" long by about 3" deep. I have some twice the length, which would be £20. It may be better if I was to do them for you on some stiff board rather than mdf, as they would be lighter to post. Have a little think about it, it may not be practical. I would of course offer you, as a blogging friend, some discount.
I will wait to hear from you, love Linda x

Of course, I've forgotten what I ordered! can't wait to get them. AND can't wait to see your first blooms this Spring!!
